Ep 31: How to expand from Europe to the United States? With Gaetano Volpe-Latiduo40

In this interview Gaetano Volpe, CEO of Latitudo40 shares his startup journey. This episode is particularly relevant to European companies expanding into the United States; as well for those founders later in their career or anyone building an ESG (environmental social and governance) startup.

How did you come up with the idea? Working in the satellite industry for the past 20 years, I’ve always focused on making satellite data easier, but I realized that most of the world doesn’t have access to the massive amount of data. There are more than 600 satellites and will probably be 2000-3000 very soon.

How do you make satellite data easier? We use artificial intelligence to make a cube of data (geographic region) easy to understand what changes are happening over time, such as crop growth and pollution, urbanization, deforestation, and greenhouse gases.

Also in this episode, Gaetano shares his insights on

  • How a long career can slowly evolve into a completely new market
  • On winning the first customer
  • Applying to accelerators
  • Europe versus United States
  • Launching into the United States from Europe
  • The importance of having a mission, vision
  • Decision making for the startup founder
  • The difference between managing and being the founder
  • Finding and hiring the right people
  • Finding a co-founder
  • And much more.

About the Guest:

Gaetano Volpe is the CEO of Latitudo 40, an Italian startup in the global satellite imaging space sector. Latitudo40 helps cities prepare for the challenges they and their residents will face from climate change. We provide urban planners with the tools they need to make informed decisions. Our system collects satellite environment and imaging data and transforms the immense data into easy-to-use graphs, charts, and trends, so urban planners can provide easy-to-understand information for city decision-makers.

Latitudo40 is a startup that wants to bring spatial data into the hands of “not space users” in a simple and useful way. We start in Italy to offer services worldwide, with a technology that is scalable by definition.
