Ep 15: Calendars, Scheduling, and Time – A Conversation with Liam Rose on a Better Way

Someday, I might say I knew Liam Rose, CEO and Founder Catalina Seven maker of Horus when he was just starting. Join me in a fantastic discussion on calendaring and time management.

What are you building? What problem are you solving? You should really be able to schedule your time in one tool if you’re going to make decisions if you’re going to look at your life. It really doesn’t make sense that you should need, four to up to 10 tools. Now, that sounds crazy.

Where did the idea come from? A road trip; When I came back, I was overbooked. I had no idea where I was spending my time.

Where did the product name “HORUS” come from?  Horology is the study of time. HORUS stands for the five-time categories health, occupation, responsibility, unique and social.

HORUS has a unique “spiral” design, where did that come from? During that road trip, I realized time is just keeps on going forever; some things closer, others further; and it’s like a spiral to a nautilus shell. The biggest part is the opening, then further you go into the spiral is further ahead into the future. But very importantly, spiral shows time continuously, it’s not chopped up into these little pieces.

Where are you in the release process? We have a closed Beta.

What have you learned about scheduling and time? Liam reveals a ton here so make sure to listen to the whole episode, but in short; your schedule is like a skeleton; with the routines and how you manage that can affect everything else in your life.

What was a surprise about building a startup? We’re not unique, but when we experienced the lack of structure; we added structure; so, we make lots of little changes and keep checking to make sure we validate everything.

Insights:

  • Focus on where you can actually be uniquely brilliant.
  • Have a set of rules and guiding principles before you ever think you need them
  • If time is a currency, how can we help people save it.
  • Being a founder is more about how much pain you can take versus what you can actually go out and do. The really key piece – the founder has the vision. Holding on to the vision keeps you going.
