Competitive Advantage, Luck and the Billion Dollar Startup

I was catching up on past episodes of Motley Fool Money Podcasts, when I stumbled across a gem of an interview with Derek Thompson, author of Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in an Age of Distraction.

The interview starts around 19′ 30″ into the podcast, and covers “Why was Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) so disruptive, and how will it handle its ever-increasing number of competitors? How does Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) stay popular with fake news scandals and an aging user base? How much does luck play into success?”  Or if you prefer reading the transcript is also available.

For all you big dreamers and entrepreneurs, aiming to build a big business, the interview gives you some insight into what it really means to have a competitive moat; and gives you a new way to look at some household names with new eyes.

The interview is great food for thought.

I now need to add the book to my growing reading list.
